Japan business community donates 2,000 cherry trees to Shanghai
The Japan Cherry Blossom Association and the Japanese business community in Shanghai on Saturday donated 2,000 cherry trees to Shanghai to promote goodwill between the two countries. The trees will be planted at Dongfang Luzhou, a 380-hectare multi-purpose park on the outskirts of Shanghai.
In a cherry-planting ceremony held at the park on Saturday, Takashi Watanabe, head of the Shizuoka Society in Shanghai, said he hopes the cherry zone—named the ‘‘Country of Fuji’’—will serve as a leisure spot for Chinese and Japanese residents in Shanghai.
The Shizuoka Society in Shanghai, a fraternity group of Japanese from Shizuoka Prefecture, has been the primary organizer of the cherry tree donation drive along with the Japanese Commerce and Industry Club in Shanghai.
‘‘I hope the 2,000 cherry trees will be a symbol of Chinese-Japanese friendship,’’ Li Shunxiu, the deputy head of the Shanghai municipal education board, said in a speech at the tree-planting ceremony.
